Why We Are Thankful For Disney

Thanksgiving Day is a time to take a second, look around, reflect and be thankful. We are all thankful for many things like our families, our health, jobs and so on. The Disney Devoted team wanted to take a second and say why we are thankful for Disney.

Lisa
I am thankful for Disney because it keeps real magic alive in this world. Only at Disney, do I get to see my 13 year old turn back into the same little girl who first looked down Main Street with wide eyes and exclaimed, "Look mom! It's Cinderella's castle!!"  For me, that is real magic. And whether I am home remembering our trips, or at the Disney and immersed in the magic, the magic is always with me and with my family. That is the gift Walt Disney gave to the world, and I will always be so very thankful for it.

Maria
I am thankful for Disney because it has become a way of life for our family.  Having grown up on Disney Classics, I loved introducing my sons to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Robin Hood and Cinderella.  Disney keeps all of us on our toes with new movies like Toy Story, Cars and Planes. Then when our oldest was just 2 we rediscovered going to Disney as a family.  There is pure joy on your child's face as they meet the people and worlds of their dreams.  Truly a magical experience for us as parents.  It's hard not to be Thankful for a place that makes wishes come true!

Michelle
Disney makes my heart happy.  I am thankful for the many memories I have created with my family and friends through the years.  I am thankful for the fact that I can escape my everyday life and journey into the movies and books I have loved since childhood.  Entering Disney World property makes my heart soar and I am thankful for my "happy" Disney World bubble which I refuse to leave once I am on property.  Disney is a language of its own in our home.  I am thankful for this as well.  The movies, characters, lessons and music are a constant thread that run through our daily lives.   Disney rocks!

Dulcie
I am thankful for Disney because it has given me so many lasting memories over the years. My first trip was at the age of 2 and I've since enjoyed so many special trips with my own little family of 3. I am also thankful that I've been able to help other families plan magical trips with their own families by being a travel planner.I have made a lot of new friends a long the way. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours.

Amanda
I am thankful for Disney because of all the memories it has given me with my boys. I do have an outside job away from the home, so all the time I can get with my boys is precious. Disney allows me to take a week or many to disconnect from everything outside the bubble and just be with them. Laughter and the smiles can never have a price tag and these memories keep my heart warm forever.

Frankie
I am thankful for Disney because of the people it has enabled me to meet.  Some of these people have become close friends, and I'm still meeting more.  Growing up in Florida, Disney was always a part of our lives.  There have been many changes to WDW since I was a child, but it's always fun to see what's just around the corner for the parks.  As someone without children, I can honestly say that we have just as much fun as parents with children at Disney.  It's the one place where we "big kids" can have as much fun as the "little kids".  Finally, I'm thankful for the opportunity to help others plan for their trips to Disney, where I'm sure they'll make many happy memories.

Hope
I am thankful for Disney because it extends childhood, if only for a few days. When I'm at Disney I'm able to let go and have fun in a way that I just can't anywhere else. But more importantly I see my teenagers doing the same. Whether they're getting a hug from their favorite character, racing to their favorite ride, indulging in a sweet treat, or skipping down Main Street without hesitation it's a real thrill as a mom to see them let go and remember childlike wonder.

Gina
I'm thankful that Disney is here for my daughter, as it was for me when I was growing up. From the time she could say her first words she had been in love with Mickey Mouse (as she calls him, "Mee Mow"). We recently too her for her first time to Disney World, and the magic I saw through her eyes was breathtaking. She was a year and a half while we were there, and it will probably never be a real or as magical for her as it was then. Our first stop on our first day was the Harmony Barbershop on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom to get on the waiting list for her first haircut. While we were waiting the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Street Party parade went by and she nearly lost her mind with excitement when she saw Mickey and all his friends. I knew she was going to love seeing him, but I was not prepared for the lump in my throat that suddenly appeared. We decided to try our hand at meeting the talking Mickey Mouse at the The Town Square Theater. We knew she would love seeing Mickey at a distance, but we were fairly certain she would be terrified of him up close. We could not have been more wrong. As soon as we entered the theater and she saw Mickey she started trying to launch herself out of our arms, she raised her hands up and kept repeating, "uppy uppy". She wanted Mickey to hold her (he's not able to hold children, fyi). That lump appeared in my throat again! Some people may wonder if it is worth it to take a toddler to Disney since they won't remember the trip, and I say it it absolutely worth it. Even though she won't remember the trip, the experience has affected her profoundly, and I'm certain she will carry it with her in some way as she grows up

Magic Wand Fruit Kabobs

So today you will be spending lots of time in the kitchen with food prep and making. Your children will be saying how bored they are, so let them make Disney Theme Fruit Kabob Magic wands. It is very easy to make and with adult supervision they can make them with no problem.
You will need skewers, a star cookie cutter, and the fruits that you and your little one want to add. I have seen them as simple as just green and purple alternating grapes with a watermelon star or even just cutting a star fruit in slices, on top. I have seen them with strawberries and even marshmallows. So let your littles one pick it out. You need to cut one fruit usually a melon up and then use the star cookie cutters to put on top. Have fun!

Please feel free to share with us your little ones and their Thanksgiving Day magic wand fruit kabobs.

Thanksgiving Day Hats

It is important to wear your Thanksgiving hat or crown to the table during your feast. So to help out with that we are going to point you in the right direction.  First you and your little one need to know how many children will be attending the feast so you know how many to make. Then you are going to head over to http://family.disney.com/thanksgiving
Then you will have three choices: Mickey's Pilgrim  Hat, Goofy's Pilgrim Hat or Belle's Thankgiving Day Crown.  Choose how many of each and let your little one get to work. They all take a minimal amount of work. When you are finished put them in a safe place until feast time.

Thanksgiving Day Kids Table

So in just a few short days you will have your feast with your family and you will be thinking over things that you are thankful for. Some homes have an adult table and then a kids table. If your children are like mine they are saying they are bored. This article will give them templates and ideas to help get their kid table ready for Thanksgiving. We moused right on over to www.family.disney.com and wanted to share a few ideas that they have to help create the kids table. Many of these require minimal effort.

You can not have a kids table without a sign.

Thanksgiving Planner

Thanksgiving week has officially begun. If your holiday is like mine you have lots to do and anxious children at home that want to help. So this week Disney Devoted is going to give you ideas and point you in the right places so that you have things for the little ones to do to help in the celebration.
It being Sunday we want to help you out with your Thanksgiving day planning. So we moused on over to www.family.disney.com and found a wonderful Mickey & Minnie's Thanksgiving Day planner. You can find it here: http://family.disney.com/crafts/mickey-minnies-thanksgiving-planner
Go there and print out the template. You then can have your little one help you fill it in. This way you know who is bringing what or what sides you are making and etc. Make sure you hang it on the fridge so you and your little one can stay on task.

Do You Need Help Packing?

Well, there is an app for that! Gone are the days of Mom handing you a handwritten list of what you are allowed to bring.  No more spreadsheets for each trip, detailed right down to the phone chargers.  Or maybe I’m the only packing nerd here?  Somehow, I doubt it.  My new favorite app discovery is the packing app.  In particular, Packing Pro. However, search your phone/tablets app selection for “packing” and many options will appear.

The features of Packing Pro:
  1. Can set up different “Lists” for trips, great if you take the same trip annually.  I have one set up for weekend trips, Disney, our annual trip to  Maine.
  2. List can be divided by “bag” and there are preloaded suggestions.
  3. Thanks to iCloud, my husband can see his list without touching my Ipad.
  4. I’m not there yet, but you can even set up weights to make sure your bag does not exceed the limits.
  5. There is even a “to-do” list section for home and work of things to do prior to your trip.  Great place to remind yourself to set up dining reservations, arrange for pet sitter etc.
I’m often reluctant to change and accepting all the new ways of “doing things”.  However, to my over-organized mind this and other packing apps are priceless!  Next time you are planning your trip to Disney you can be sure to have a list of your favorite Mickey items.  Autograph books, Mickey Ears, Pin Lanyards, etc.   Perfect for families with older children they can pack their own bags by looking at their phone or tablet.  So if you own the technology, embrace it.   Make more time to check out Disney Devoted for the fun planning of your trip!

Taking A Break Inside the Parks

The seemingly non-stop action at Disney World is a large part of why we love going.   But let's face it, even in The Most Magical Place on Earth we still sometimes need a break. There are a lot of people who like to schedule breaks in their afternoon to go back to the resort to swim, nap, or just lounge around. That's a great strategy for many people but what if you just want a quick recharge without leaving the parks? Thankfully there are multiple places in each park to do just that:

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Our favorite pick-me-up spot in this park is the Honey I Shrunk The Kids Movie Set Adventure. The larger than life plants and bugs are fun for the kids to climb and explore while Mom and Dad can lean back and just take a minute to relax.

Another great option in this park is a leisurely stroll through Walt Disney: One Man's Dream. This interesting look into the mind of Walt Disney is rarely crowded and you walk through at your own pace so your break from the hustle and bustle can be as short or long as you'd like.

EPCOT:

There are multiple options within EPCOT that offer hands on exhibits and low key displays that can be be explored at your own pace. From making paper in Innoventions to finding some fishy friends in the waters of Sea Base, there's a laid back activity for nearly everyone.

If you prefer a break that gets you off your feet EPCOT also has a few slow rides that might do the trick. Living With the Land offers a slow trip through the greenhouses that grow everything from the foods served up Garden Grill to the Mickey Shaped Pumpkins you'll spot at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. If you're looking for a longer break Ellen's Energy Adventure is a 45 minute seated slow ride through time.

Animal Kingdom:

There are multiple trails and exhibits at Animal Kingdom where you can stroll at your own pace to see various plant and animal life including the Discovery Island Trail, Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, and the Oasis Exhibits. The Boneyard is a playground where the kids can climb and explore dinosaur bones at their own pace while Mom and Dad relax for a few minutes. If you're ready for a break from walking and being on your feet you can hop on the Wildlife Express Train for a 12 minute journey for a behind the scenes peek into the care of the animals in the park. One of Animal Kingdom's most popular attractions, Kilimanjaro Safari, offers an 18 minute ride with close up views of animals in lush habitats.

Magic Kingdom:

If you're looking for a low-key place to take a break from all the standing and walking there are multiple options in this park. The Liberty Square Riverboat is a 1/2 mile, 17 minute journey with glimpses of sights you won't be able to see if you stay on land. A trip around the Magic Kingdom on the Walt Disney World Railroad will offer another 20 minutes worth of unique views of the park.  For a relaxing, ten minute trip behind and ABOVE the scenes don't miss The Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover with even more spectacular views you won't want to miss.

If what your kids really need is a little unstructured play time then you can have a little fun and get a little (or a lot) wet at the Casey Jr. Splash and Soak Station. Or head on over to Tom Sawyer Island for an escape from the crowds and the noise while you explore up to five different trails.

The Carousel of Progress and Hall of Presidents are interesting, but not overly stimulating, shows in the Magic Kingdom where you can sit and relax in a comfortable, cool theater for about 20 minutes.

As you can see there are plenty of quiet and relaxing spots at Walt Disney World that make it easy to recharge and jump right back into the magic. Do you have a favorite place to relax in the parks that's not mentioned here?

4 Moms, 6 Boys, A Girl and Big Hero 6

As many of us know Disney's Big Hero 6 was just released. In its opening weekend at the box office it took the top spot and grossed $56.2 million in one weekend. Do you have a little one that has been asking to go and you are not sure? Four Disney Devoted moms took our little ones out to see it during opening weekend and we are giving you our thoughts based on what families thought.  Thanks to Dulcie's daughter, Erinlee for a 10 year old's review of the movie!

My name is Amanda...

I am a mom of two boys who are 6 and 10. My boys were super excited to see Big Hero 6, so much so that I got them to clean their rooms. (Bonus points for that Disney).  My boys enjoyed most of the movie with lots of laughs and mom did you see that. The beginning seemed a little less kid friendly for me with robot fighting and gambling. It seemed slow in the beginning but gets better. Once it gets going it is amazing. The storyline and the animation both wrap you up like a hug from Baymax and you forget you are in a theater watching a movie. There are two distinct parts in the movies that caused tears for not only my boys but also for this mama. My oldest in particular liked the "tech" parts of the movie. They talk about robots and chemistry. He also liked how you can be a "superhero" without having superpowers but just by being you. Disney made me fall in love with my first villain. He has many alias such as:Yokai, Mr. Kabuki, Mask Man. He is based from Lord Deathstrike from the original Big Hero 6 comic books. The animation details for this villain was amazing and he reminds me of a super villain that would be in a comic book. I do like saying Wasabi's name just to annoy my boys now. All in all it was a great movie that is an emotional ride.
Stay until the very end. I know sitting through the credits is boring but it is a must do.

My name is Maria...

I took my two sons, 7 and 3 to see Big Hero 6 this weekend.  I even brought my big kid, aka my husband.  I was in no big rush to see this movie, all I could think of was the marshmallow guy in Ghostbusters.  But thanks to endless commercials on Disney Jr., my boys were all for it.  I was glad to see a new "boy-centric" movie from Disney.  While we all loved Frozen, we were a "teeny-tiny" bit done with Anna and Elsa.

The movie does contain some scary themes, including death.  Other than being a little startled, the boys did fine with the loud scenes.  Also scary for us grown-ups is talk of "teenage hormones".   Like most children's movies, there is an underlying adult humor to keep us from going stir crazy the first 10 times we watch.  My boys understand about feelings, so for them it didn't mean anything.  If they were older it might have been more real, but they would have had more understanding.  I don't think it went beyond the realm of appropriate.

The "end game" of the movie is to bring home the point that everyone has a special gift.  Every kid, no matter how different can make a difference.  Brains over brawn and crushing some stereotypes applies to most of the Big Hero 6.  A family doesn't have to be blood related, that relying on your friends and a big marshmallow guy can save the day.  I won't reveal too much, but suffice to say we all loved it.  Like any Disney movie it was an emotional roller-coaster and both my 7 year old and I were crying at points.  Definitely give it a chance and enjoy!

My name is Michelle...

Big Hero 6 has been a hot topic in my household for some time.  I have two boys, ages 5 and 3. The previews, the toys and the cuddly white balloon guy certainly was enough to pique my little one's interests.  To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to the film.  I am not a super hero fan and the previews lead me to believe this was an average super hero film.  It is not.  The humor and theme immediately engaged me and I was soon in love with Hiro and Baymax.  Admittedly, as a Disney fanatic, I am not a hard "sell."

On the flip side, my 5  year old who is a member of the ASD (Austim Specturm Disorder) club or as we call it, the Awesomely Sensitive Dudes club,  was a little rattled by the topic of Death being presented to him.  With a little cuddle and explanation, we moved on from that hiccup.  Unfortunately, the intensity of the transformation of one of the characters in the film was too much for his little sensitive soul.  As many Moms of an autistic child know, figuring out the subtleties of emotional changes can be very difficult.  Also, as an ASDer my 5 year old is very literal.  Bad is bad and good is good; there is no middle ground.  Fear took over and we had to leave the movie.

If you have any children with special sensitivity needs, you may want to prepare them for some of the themes and changes in the film.  It is difficult to find a lot of information about a movie before it officially opens so we probably should have waited a few weeks. Then we could have done our research and discussed the film more thoroughly prior to heading to the theater.  We used this unfortunate reaction to talk about "feelings"  and how people's attitudes can change.  And this doesn't mean they are "bad" or "evil." In our family, everyday is a new learning experience for us all!

If you would like more specific information regarding the film in order to prepare your sensitive child, feel free to message me.  I was purposefully avoiding spoilers.

My name is Dulcie...

I took my 10 yr old Princess to Big Hero 6 opening night. This has been on our MUST WATCH
list since we first saw the teasers as DHS forever ago. Baymax stole my heart from the first teaser
trailer we saw. From the first time we heard Baymax say "Hairy Baby" that was our favorite
quote from the movie hands down!

I will admit I cried more than once during the movie while consoling my daughter who cried her share too. But it's not a Disney movie if you don't shed a tear or two. At least the theatre was dark so nobody knew where the sobs were coming from.

It was a little "dark" in spots and if you have a younger child that gets frightened easily or doesn't like loud noises you might want to skip it at the theatre and get it on DVD to turn the volume down or skip a scene without them getting to frightened. There were a few things that made the adults laugh that the kids didn't quite catch and flew right over my 10 yr olds head too. I always love a good movie that makes me emotionally connected with the characters and even if they aren't real I always feel like I know them just by their story. This one was no different.

The one complaint I have is the omission of a few scenes that were in the trailers for the movie. That happens in about all of the movies but I hope they are in the outtakes when it's released on Bluray and DVD.

Be sure to look for Mochi aka"Hairy Baby" (the cat) dressed at Stitch...and do NOT leave as soon as the credits start rolling. You will miss a very important scene that may or may not lead you to believe they may have plans for a Big Hero 6 2 ... or just tying Marvel in with Disney kinda way!

*FIST BUMP* BALALALALA

My name is Erinlee...

I want to share a 10 year olds perspective on Big Hero 6.  I thought that it was a VERY FUNNY movie but there were some very sad parts too. I do not want to spoil it but be sure to take some tissues with you.
HoneyLemon and Baymax were my 2 favorite characters in this movie.I like HoneyLemon because she was a girl and loves science just like me. She has a very cool purse that is her special weapon against the villain in the movie. I love Baymax because he was very caring and wanted to take care of Hiro.
This movie is like a Superhero movie but Disney style. There is something for everyone from kids to parents and even grandparents. Be sure to stay through the credits to see a surprise scene and you won't be sorry that you did.
